The Roundup

The Camino de Sonoma runs 85 miles from the mission to the coast. The route is a six-stage walk from the Sonoma mission out to Fort Ross, built and maintained by trail volunteers. You can hike it in one push, or in pieces. One of the volunteers, a retired Sonoma State kinesiology professor, talks about the hill he thought would finish him. Sonoma Magazine

Kent Porter photographs the sky after the news day ends. If you’ve lived in the area for very long, you’ve seen Kent’s work. The Press Democrat's longtime photographer shoots the night sky as a counterweight to covering fires and floods, and says he waits until everyone else has gone home. It is the same eye you have seen on the front page for years, pointed up instead of out. Sonoma Magazine

Zone Zero clears the first five feet around your house. California's new defensible-space standard requires property owners in high-risk zones to remove or sharply reduce anything flammable within five feet of a structure, which means the planter box, the woodpile, and the shrub against the siding. It reaches nearly 46,300 buildings across Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties in CAL FIRE territory alone, plus thousands more inside city limits; new construction has to comply immediately, while existing homes get a phase-in. Business Happenings

Now open: Screamin' Mimi's Ice Cream — Our local legend is expanding! After more than 30 years in Sebastopol, owner Maraline "Mimi" Olson has bought a 4,000-square-foot building in Cotati for a second shop, with a kitchen big enough to eventually make all of it in one place. (KSRO)
